Best Time To Trek Everest Base Camp

The best time for Everest trekking is Autumn (Sept to Nov) and spring (March to June). These two are the best seasons for the Everest trekking in Nepal.

The weather is perfect for mountaineering and you will get a spectacular view of the snow-capped mountains under the clear, deep blue sky. There are fewer chances of rainfall during these seasons. Spend some days hiking in the Himalayan villages and you will witness the traditional Tibetan cultures of the inhabitants of this region.

You will also get to explore the authentic lifestyle of the locals, Khumbu Icefall and wildlife in the Natural Park. You can also trek during December, that is the winter season. The trails are usually less crowded in December and you will have more options for accommodation.

Phakding Monastery

Approximately 8 KM walk from lukla takes you at Phakding ; a small town enroute to Everest Base Camp  which is also first town spending a night in Everest Base Camp  Trek . If you have time you could explore around village and also can visit Phakding Monastery also known as Rimijung Monastery. Just 30-40 min walk up  you will reach the monastery that has great important for monastic people and peace lover .Passing through beautiful MANE wall, prayer flags and pine forest ,beautifully set up monastery can be found which gives beautiful view down valley and can be seen beautiful mountain on clear weather . Meeting monk and having the meditation will be great experience for you during Everest Base Camp Trek .To Reach Monastery itself will be a good acclimatization to climb high next day . It could be helpful for physically and mentally .

There is numerous suspension bridge from Lukla to Namchebazar.Out of them Hillary suspension bridge is the final bridge to crossfor putting your feet at Namchebazar located at Larche Dovan. After 30-40 walk from Jorsalle(Lunch place ), you will see two bridge hanging and connecting two cliff above the Dudhkoshi River . Surely, the lower and dying suspension bridge is original Hillary bridge named after the Sir,Admund Hilary. Instead of renovate that original Hillary Bridge, Government decided to build a new bridge above of it and original Hillary bridge let be as a open museum without a entrance ticket. Namche and Chaurikharka village development committee started to build the 113 m long new bridge on 21 April 2011 and completed on 31 July,2013. Locally this bridge named as “Shree Larche Dovan Jholunge Pul”. While crossing the bridge , you can see Mt. Tabuche 6496m and Cholatse 6440m on your right where as  can see dramatic view of valley including Dudhkoshi River . After 15-20 min walk from the bridge you can see the first view of Mt. Everest as well.

Namchebazar : a gate way of Khumbu and Gokyo Valley

Namche Bazar is a gateway of Khumbu and Gokyo Valley set up at altitude of 3440m from sea level and surrounded by Mt.Kongde Re(6187m)on South and Mt. Thamserku(6606m) in East . Since there is great number of Sherpa people staying and have huge economic movement it is also know as unofficial capital city of Solukhumbu District. Ancient time, it acts as trading port for the lower and higher village in Himalayan territory. Most of the time people used to come with yak product like as yak cheese, butter, yak hair and many more to exchange with grain. Afterward Sir Admund Hilary and Tenzin Norgay Sherpa climbed Mt.Everest on 1953 AD, face of this small village changed drastically with in few decades. Every individual spends a night to get the joy of this atmosphere and for acclimatization as well. It is also known as Thamel of Solukhumbu district where you could get anything you want like as trekking gears, souvenir, Irish Pub, coffee point, pizza point and star accommodation as well. Sherpa cultural museum, National Park ground, Monastery, School and spa are available in this small town. Most notable reason to spend a night before climb high is to acclimatized your body with altitude so that most of trekkers they stop and go for hike to Everest view hotel. National Park and Everest view hotel is the best view point for Mt. Everest. Tengboche Monastery

Tengboche Monastery is the largest Tibetan Buddhist Monastery of Khumbu Valley located in Tengboche Village of Nepal. It is also known as Dawa Choling Gompa which is situated at 3867m. This monastery is exactly 9 KM far north from Namchebazar which takes approximately 7-8 hour walk to reach from Namche.Remember that before you reach Tengboche you hace to face one of tough and long  uphill climb in this Everest base camp trekking route.The strongly connected with Rongbuk Monastery in Tibet was built by Lama Gulu in 1916 AD for the first time however it was destroyed couple of time.Since Nepal is earthquake hit zone , this monastery was also destroyed by an earthquake in 1934 AD and rebuilt on consecutive year. Again in 1989 AD , This monastery was totally burnt out by fire  and many of historical collection was collapsed during those lost. By the help of volunteers and overseas it able to rebuilt. This monastery is not only biggest of Khumbu Valley also in the beautiful location. From Monastery itself can see breathtaking mountain view including Mt. Everest,Mt.Lhotse,Mt.Amadablam Mt.Nuptse and many more .Because of it’s location and spirituality it remain famous attraction point in Everest Base Camp Trekking Route. After 2-3 hour gentle ascend from Dingboche, you will reach at Thukla . Thukla is one and only a food point in between Dingboche and Labuche where most of trekkers have there lunch and climb acute uphill to reach Thukla Pass. You may feel difficult in this part of Everest Base Camp route but if you keep going on you can make it this part with in one and half hour walk. Once your step touch the top of Thukla pass at altitude of 4800m from sea label, you will notice the hundreds of memorial of climber and sherpa who lost their life during expedition of different mountain in Khumbu valley including Mt.Everest.

“ Go Sleep Forever in Everest, His soul will always remain Alive ,and Rest in Peace” some of stone slap is decorated by these great statement to Honor their family member’s soul . The deceased family ,friends and their well wisher make these kind of monument to show respect and pray for peacefully set up in Heaven.

The most notable among the monument is the memorial dedicating to Mr.Scott Eugene Fischer. An American climbing guide, Mr.Scott Eugene Fischer died in may 11,1996 at age pf 40 years. He was a great personal with great heart and responsible climbing guide. During that expedition, he came down to basecamp from Cam II with ill Dale Cruise and get back to camp II to re -join his team. He took his last breath nearby to Southeast ridge balcony while descending down from very late summit at 3:45PM. He able to save Dale Cruise but not able to protect himself.

Thukla pass Alpinist memorial park also hold the memorial monument of great climber Babu Chiri Sherpa who died in Everest on April 25.

Reading all of those inscriptions mentioned in each memorial stone and taking photo of all memo of great alpinist provide tremendous feeling about mountain life. You will know how difficult to climb up and also teach how much difficult to maintain physically and mentally to go for adventure in high Himalaya.

Kalapathar : a paradise of the Khumbu Valley

Kalapathar literally means black rock. This whole word has two sub word Kala and Patthar means Black and Rock respectively.  Kalapathar is the most popular spot in Everest Base Camp Trek route after the ultimate destination Everest Base Camp located in front of south ridge of Mt. Pumari and above the Gorakshep a last hotel area in this trek. The top of Kalapathar offer magical view of Mt.Everest, Mt.Nuptse, Mt.Lhotse, Mt.Amadablam, Mt.Changtse and many more. Approximately 5600 m Kalapathar provides closest and biggest view of Mt. Everest including south col and Khumbu Ice Fall.

The top of Kalapathar is 1.5 KM ascend from Gorakshep and takes 2 hours to climb. Trekker start early in the morning to catch the sunrise view however if weather is perfect sunset view is spectacular from top of Kalapathar. Another note able things is Mount.Everest Webcam set up in Kalapathar which is also known as highest altitude webcam in the world. For the first time it was installed by Italian scientist as part of NAST piramid observatory project to collect data from summit of Everest and surroundings. The main aim of putting webcam on top of Kalapathar is to analysis the influence of climate change.

Day 01: Arrival at Kathmandu.

Activities: This is your first day in Kathmandu. After your arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport, our representative  will receive you and transfer you to your hotel in Thamel. There you will be briefly explained about the trekking that will start from tomorrow. Explore the city for the rest of the day and prepare for your trek.

Day 02: Kathmandu to Lukla (2850m) Flight and hike to Phadking (2660m)

Difficulty: Easy. Flats and downhill, a well-developed path

Activities: Breakfast at the hotel and a private vehicle will receive and drop you off at the airport from where you’ll take a 35-minute flight to Lukla. Enjoy the dramatic scenes and breathtaking Himalayan view throughout your flight. After reaching Lukla, we will start our hiking towards Phakding. The way follows thick rhododendrons, magnolia trees, and pine forests. You can also visit a local monastery. Overnight at Phakding.

Day 03: Trek to Namche Bazaar (3435m)

Passing through the banks of Dudh Koshi river and beautiful pine forests, we will cross the Hillary Suspension Bridge. Overnight at Namche.

Take a day trip to Namche Bazaar climbing 300m to Khumjung village where you can see Hillary School, Sherpa museum, Buddhist monastery and back to Namche for sleep.

Day 05: Trek From Namche Bazaar to Tengboche (3890m)

Activities: On our fifth day, we will continue our trekking after having breakfast at the Lodge. Tengboche is our destination for today. We will pass through the stone staircases and reach Mongola pass from where the trial will begin. You will get to see a spectacular view of Mt. Ama Dablam, Mt. Thamserku and Mt. Khumbila along the journey. Take pictures of the panoramic views of the mountains and capture your moments. After reaching Tengboche, you can visit the largest monastery in the Khumbu region and take blessings for your safety and success for the journey.

Day 06: Trek From Tengboche to Dingboche (4400m)

Activities: Breakfast at lodge and morning preparation for today’s trek. The trail follows stone steps and riverbanks as the previous day. Trekking is a bit difficult compared to the previous day but the breathtaking views of the mountains will keep you motivated to move further. After reaching Dingboche, you will notice changes in the landscapes. Dingboche is the only place in a region where barley is grown.

Activities: This is our second day of acclimatization. You will trek through steep and rocky trails to allow yourself to acclimatize. Then we will return back to Dingboche and have our dinner at the lodge where we’ll be spending the night.

Day 08: Trek From Dingbuche to Lobuche (4900m)

Activities: We will continue our trek after having breakfast at the lodge. The trials are comparatively harder than the previous days. We will move uphill following Khumbu Glacier, Pumori, and surrounding mountains. Trekking starts getting difficult but the startling views of the mountains will motivate you to continue trekking and move further. Take rest after reaching Lobuche. Dinner and overnight at the Lodge.

Day 09: Trek from Lobuche to Gorkasep and Everest Base Camp (5364m) to Gorekshep (5180m)

Activities: The most awaited day of the whole journey is here. Today we will trek to Everest Base Camp. Breakfast at the lodge as usual and we’ll set off. The trial to Gorakshep is rocky uphill with a jaw-dropping surrounding view of Khumbu icefall, magnificent view of Pumori and beautiful mountains. From Gorak Shep, the trail becomes rough as you’ll pass through large rock, up and down. A few hours hike and Congratulations! You have made it to the base of Mt. Everest at the height of 5364m. Celebrate your achievement and take a lot of pictures of the panoramic view of the Mount massif and of yourself as well.

Then we will return back to Gorakshep and spend the night there.

Day 10: Early Morning Trek from Gorekshep to Kalapathar (5545m) and Pheriche (4320m)

Activities: Today we will wake up early in the morning at about  4:00 am and leave for Kalapatthar, a viewpoint of sunrise. The sunrise from between the Mount massif looks amazingly spectacular. Make sure you take a lot of pictures and time-lapse videos of the sunrise. You will also see breathtaking views of Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Thamserku, Cho-yu, Ama Dablam, Pumori etc from Kalapatthar. Afterward, we will return to our lodge to have our breakfast and descend to Pheriche for today’s destination.

Day 11: Trek From Phercihe to Namche (3435m)

Activities: Breakfast at the lodge as the usual and downward journey to Namche, a beautiful Colorful Sherpa village in the Everest region. Passing through the suspension bridges and small villages and hiking with gentle up and down hills, we will reach Namche Bazaar. You will see trekkers moving in the opposite direction and mountains you had seen on your ways to EBC like Ama Dablam, Thamserku, and Lhotse, etc. Celebrate your victory after reaching Namche Bazaar. Dinner and overnight at Namche.

Day 12: Trek From Namche to Phadking and Lukla (2835m)

Activities: Breakfast at the lodge and we will hike downwards to Phakding/Lukla. This is the last day of your trek and last night you’ll be spending on this Himalayan region.  You’ll cross several suspension bridges and pass through the bank of Dudh Koshi river till you arrive Phakding. From Phakding, ascend to Lukla after taking some rest. Get freshen up at your lodge and explore Lukla village.

Activities: On our thirteenth day, we will have our breakfast at the lodge and take a 45 min flight to Kathmandu. You can enjoy the same Himalaya views and scenery from above. Take some rest after reaching your hotel in Kathmandu and in the evening we will serve you a traditional Nepali dinner as a farewell. The dinner will be followed by a cultural dance.

Day 14: Departure for your onward flight

Have your breakfast at the hotel and our private vehicle will drop you off at the airport to catch your flight. Make sure you have not left anything.  How to overcome altitude sickness during Everest Base Camp Trek?

Different trekkers have different experience about Altitude Sickness that may be life threatening or mild attack. You can find thousands and thousands article about altitude sickness with its consequences, prevention and treatment. We are sharing what we experienced for last decades. It is likely hard to say who and when will get altitude sickness but we can say that we can overcome its probable attack. Here are some tips to prevent altitude sickness during Everest Base Camp Trek.

  • Water is a heart for your trekking in Everest Base Camp Trek. Drink a sip of water every 20 Minutes. You may feel not thirsty but you have to drink it.
  • Do not Drink Alcohol at least first 48 hours after you arrive at an elevation above 8000 feet.
  • Climb less than 1600 feet per day after you reach at 9,000 feet.
  • Climb slow and gradually. Climbing slow and gradually means, you are acclimatizing yourself on the same time.
  • Don’t be open with open air that my create fever. Fever with cold is not a big problem but it is more difficult to recover.
  • Drink a lot of soup rather than solid and fried food during the trip. Garlic soup and Ginger lemon honey work well in altitude (it is our experience).
  • Don’t get really cold and hot shower during the trip, it is not problem for altitude but it may cause a headache and fever. (we recommend to wipe your body with warm water)
  • If your inner cloth is wet, change right after you have reached camp.
  • Have a day break once you reach around 3000 m and 4000m. That will help you to acclimatized body
  • If you are not tired, you better to do small hike near to your camp. That will help to make your sleep well. Climb high and sleep in low is the best way to acclimatized your body.
  • Read your body and act according to your brain.
  • Meditate and less talking can save your energy to reach your destination.
  • Medicines are available to overcome acute mountain sickness. Please kindly discuss with your Docter before you leave for adventure. Surely, our guide can suggest but they are not doctor.

What is the supreme time for Everest Base Camp Trek?

Everest base camp trekking is doable for every season. Each time of the season have own value and significance however Autumn and Spring is the best time of the year. Winter (December- February) offers peaceful atmosphere with chill weather, temperature could drop down to -20 degree C at high elevations. In this time, surely you will have chance to experience snow fall and might need proper gear. Morning will be clear sky and can have magical view around.

Flight access for Everest Base Camp Trek

One and only nearest airport on service to start the trekking towards Everest Base Camp is Tenzing Hilary Airport set up in at Lukla, a small town of Solukhumbu District with 527m runway. This airport is also known as the top five dangerous airport in the world which is located at altitude of 2,840m from sea level. Unpredictable weather condition, short runway, located in the lap of the mountain and technically difficult for go arounds makes it as the most dangerous airport in the world. Most of the time of year, flight leave towards lukla from Kathmandu only but in peak season it also operates from Manthali/Ramechhap to skip air traffic in Kathmandu.

In peak season (Autumn and Spring) most of the flight will operate via Manthali Airport located at altitude of 474m from sea level. This airport starts to serve from 1979 AD and continue till date. It is also one of the short runway airports with 530m runway distance. Manthali airport also acts as emergency landing airport located 140 KM south -east from Kathmandu. In the peak season, trekkers need to travel 4–5-hour drive to catch the flight towards Lukla. It takes approximately 15 to 20 min to reach Lukla airport from Manthali depend on aircraft.

Instead of peak season, flight to lukla always operate from Tribhuvan International airport that takes 30-35 minutes to reach Lukla. Flight towards lukla always depend on unfavorable weather condition, air traffic, runway issues and geographical challenges. Flight delayed and cancellation is always expected in this sector. To make sure to complete the Everest base camp trek, it is always better to have an extra day in case of cancellation of flight.

Flight to Lukla operates with small aircraft that can carry only 14 to 18 people and certain weight depend on aircraft. 15 kg including duffle bag and hand bag is the maximum weight limit for lukla flight. If you have more than 15 KG, you may be allowed to take with an extra fee of USD 2 to USD 5 for each kilogram. In some cases, you may not able to take with enough payment as well. It is always better to stay on weight limit to avoid stress on airport. Drinking water bottle can take on your hand but walking stick must be taken in luggage not in hand bag.

Guide, Porter, Driver, and Restaurant staff will be pleased to accept some gift from you. Your small kindness will send them home with happy face and positivity on ward. It is always confusion about the good tip for them, a good practice is to set aside 10% of your entire expenses during Everest Base Camp trek. For example, if you expense around $2000, each trekker should add $200 and divide it by a 60/40 ration between guide and porter. Surely, porter carry heavy load but guide has a key person in Everest Base Camp Trek.
