Everest Marathon in Nepal is an international event held in the district of Solukhumbu, Nepal. It was officially named Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon. This event celebrates the historical ascent on Mt. Everest by Late Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary on 29th May 1953.
This Marathon is held annually around the territory of Mount Everest in the month of May on 29. It starts at 5365m above sea level. It is considered to be one of the highest, toughest and iconic trail races in the world. This Marathon is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the highest marathon in the world.
This is a charity event whose aim is to raise funds for development projects in Nepal.
The journey begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, from where the trekking point begins. The race starts at the Everest Base Camp and follows the traditionally used crisscross at the high Sherpa trails of Khumbu valley.
You will race across the glacial moraine, downwards along narrow tracks and wire suspension bridges, through rhododendron forest and along trails high above the river. The marathon finishes at the Sherpa town of Namche Bazaar at 3446m.
The 2020 edition is the 18th edition of this magnificent event. It is annually organized by a travel company Himalayan Expeditions with the official recognition by the Government of Nepal.
Runners from all over the world aged 18 or more-from professionals to new runners can participate in this event with the fulfillment of a certain set of criteria.
The air is thin at the higher altitude where the Marathon starts. The lack of oxygen makes every step laborious. Therefore, it is necessary to simulate high-altitude conditions in order to give the body a head start before scaling the mountain.
You might lose your appetite because of the altitude or limited menu of noodles. Staying hydrated is very compulsory so, drink at every opportunity.
The participants must submit the medical checkup certificate from authorized professionals. It is necessary in order to make sure that the runner is able to withstand the high altitude conditions. It is also mandatory for the runners to have valid health insurance before participation. The organizer’s advice to take a minimum of 1-5 days of acclimatization.
The key to success is to simulate high-altitude conditions in order to give the body a head start before scaling the mountain.
This is not just a running event or a sport– it is truly a once in a lifetime experience. With Mount Face Nepal (MFN), you can create some of the best memories of your life through this marathon.
